Top Mount Cockpit Fit Pedal Boxes

If you’ve got a car you want to race, or you’re building your own project car, a pedal box with a bias bar is an essential aftermarket investment. While the most common aftermarket type of racing pedal box is the floor-mounted type, top-mounted pedals maintain an important place in our pedal boxes line-up.

Top-mounted cockpit fit pedal boxes are slightly more difficult to fit than floor-mounted pedals, as you’ll generally need to build a framework for the pedals to hang off of. However, top-mounted pedals offer the option of mounting the master cylinders facing backwards, to give an improved pedal ratio and a better stroke for the master cylinder pushrod. The pedal box also won’t sit and rust in a puddle of rainwater if there’s water ingress, and the angle of travel is more natural, providing better levels of throttle control.

At the end of the day, whether you prefer top-mounted or floor-mounted pedals will be dependent on your personal preference when it comes to ergonomics and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get a pedal box with a brake bias?

Pedal boxes with a brake bias are a perfect choice for drivers who want a brake bias component to adjust the brake balance between the front and rear wheels. This handles understeering and oversteering in different driving conditions (racetracks, weather etc).

Top mount pedal box pros and cons

Top Mount pedal boxes provide a natural angle of an accelerator pedal, resulting in better throttle control.

On the downside, some drivers find it uncomfortable to hold down the accelerator for long periods of time when using a top-mounted pedal box. It’s also harder to install a top-mounted pedal box as all cars have a floor for a bottom-mounted pedal system, but most cars will require more time to fit a top-mounted system in the cockpit.

What you’ll prefer boils down to personal preference and also often depends significantly on the pedal placement, shape and resistance than the actual mounting method of floor-mounted versus top-mounted pedals.
