Cockpit-Fit Floor Mount Racing Pedal Boxes

A racing pedal box with a bias bar is an invaluable tool for any serious race car driver. The most common aftermarket type of pedal box amongst track racers is the floor-mounted pedal box-type, especially if the car you’re building has a flat floor, because the floor mounted pedals are much easier to install than their top-mounted pedal box counterparts.

Most purpose-built race cars have floor-mounted pedals (also called bottom-mounted), and for good reason. While some of it has to do with the ease of mounting, a lot has to do with the ergonomics of the driver’s seating position — which is typically positioned as low as possible, as well as being moved several inches towards the centre of the car (for safety and weight distribution).

With the inclusion of a brake bias bar, you can also adjust the brake balance between the front and rear wheels to prevent understeering or oversteering, or when driving on different track conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

For drivers who heel-toe shift, do you suggest top-mounted or floor-mounted pedals?

A floor-mounted pedal box is more advantageous for drivers that ‘heel-toe’ shift with the sides of their foot, rather than actually using a heel and a toe, as there’s more room for movement up top.

With racing pedals for cars, whether you’d prefer floor-mount or top-mount pedals is down to personal preference. However, many drivers find that the movement of floor-mounted pedals follow the natural movement of your foot when seated more closely. To get leverage on the pedal with the ball of your foot may be easier with floor mounted pedals, and with this setup you can free up space above your feet, which is prime real estate.

How are throttle cables mounted with an OBP pedal box?

Aftermarket racing pedal boxes are universal as they’re built with multiple configurations in mind, so there’s not a ready-made solution for the throttle cable. On most pedal boxes, you will find a linkage attached to the accelerator pedal, which is to be modified to suit your size/type of throttle cable.
