Hydraulic Handbrakes

If you want to achieve controlled cornering at speed on track, a hydraulic handbrake has got to be at the top of your list when it comes to racing mods. Plumbed directly into your car’s braking hydraulics, our hydro handbrakes are ideal for racing enthusiasts who want to see more consistent, reliable and downright sharp performance from their brakes.

As opposed to stock road cars, cars that are intended for use on a track tend to be fitted with hydraulically operated brakes instead of cable-operated brakes. The hydraulic handbrake is a better alternative for racing competitions due to being plumbed directly into the braking hydraulics. This means that the handbrake reacts more consistently without the potential for overstretching, as a cable can.

The range of hydraulic handbrakes at OBP includes options for non-locking and lockable hydro handbrakes, as well as horizontal, vertical, 45-degree and reverse vertical setups.

The Victory Vertical Reverse Hydraulic Handbrake, for example, has been designed so that the master cylinder is facing forward in the car under normal handbrake operation. This offers more versatility for fitting if you’re working with limited space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hydraulic handbrakes road legal in the UK?

Hydraulic parking brakes are legal in the UK, but not in all circumstances. The UK MOT Manual notes that hydraulic handbrakes must be used to assist the application or release of a mechanical brake on cars first used on or after 1 January 1968.

This is because some hydraulic handbrakes don’t have the capability to lock into position when parked, which means the car could roll backwards if left on a hill or the like.

Certain hand brakes in our range are labelled as ‘lockable’, meaning they include a locking mechanism for when the handbrake is used to secure the vehicle in place.

Are hydraulic handbrakes common in racing and motorsport?

Hydraulic handbrakes are a common component in rallying and drifting to carry more speed through corners.

What is the advantage of a vertical-fit hydraulic handbrake?

The advantage of a hydro handbrake with a vertical lever is that it can be mounted closer to the reach of the driver. Generally, though, vertical vs hydraulic handbrakes are down to the personal preference of the driver.
