BMW E46 Track-Pro Race Pedal Box with Fly By Wire Accelerator – Obp New Product

We have been at it again!!

You can now get a obp pedal solution for the BMW E46 that gives you full control over the front to rear brake bias and is easy to install.

The Track-Pro systems are designed to fit to the angle of the floor pan, this revolutionary and innovative obp design is very easy to install.

You will not have issues with the steering column / electrics getting in the way or having to fit mounting brackets.

These are the normal issues you will encounter when you install a universal fit race pedal box.

                                                 

This E46 race pedal solution is perfect for Drifting, Rally, Race and Track Day cars.

What is really clever about this unit is that the original BMW Fly By Wire throttle pedal is used with this Track-Pro pedal box.

This is a fantastic solution to the problem of the Fly By Wire system being very hard to get around.

With our obp BMW E46 pedal system you do not have to worry about this problem any more.

Please have a look at the images below, it is a very easy modification that is required to enable the original Fly By Wire Accelerator system to be used and fitted to the obp Track-Pro pedal system.

The first thing you will be required to do is remove the E46 Accelerator Pedal, remove the screws that hold the side cover on.

You will need to saw / cut through the bottom of the main unit. As shown in the image above.

This will release the throttle pedal pad.

          

You will then have the pedal in the above state. You will need to cut the ball off the end of the push rod and connect the plastic ball joint that is supplied with the pedal box.

This is a tight fit however you may wish to use an adhesive to secure the ball joint to the Fly By Wire push rod.

The Fly By Wire (FBW) unit is then bolted to the bracket on the E46 pedal box, you will need to drill the bracket and the FBW unit to secure.

This is then fitted into the car using the floor pan angle to secure the pedal box.

What Is “The Blip” And “Heel And Toe”? Race Car Tips – Obp Tech Session

Hello, ok straight to business.

The Blip?

The Blip is used when you are changing down a gear without loosing speed or grip.

Properly done the RPM should be raised to approx 2700 to 3000 RPM just before the clutch is engaged again. You do not push the throttle and hold it, you tap it, the best term to explain it is you “Blip” the throttle, this is a quick and sharp burst.

The blip should take place just before re-engaging the clutch by doing this you will not get the shock through the drive train or slow the car down when going from a higher gear to a lower gear. In a competition environment on the race track when you are driving close to the tyres limitations of adhesion, a down shift with out a blip could cause a loss of grip and send the car into a spin or loose grip in the straight line braking zone.

Heel and Toe?

Because you are using your left foot on the clutch and your right foot on the brake, you have to make some adjustments so you can blip the throttle. The way to do this is to adjust your foot position and use a obp race pedal box designed for heel and toe. You use the ball of you foot pressing on the brake pedal making sure you leave enough of the outside of the foot to roll over so you can blip the throttle. By blipping the throttle you will enable a smooth down shift with out loosing any tyre grip.

The correct brake and throttle pedal relationship should locate the throttle and brake approx 30mm to 50mm apart. The throttle is set slightly below the brake pedal when the brake is hard on. The heel and toe method is a pretty hard technique to master and requires plenty of practice.

The heel and toe term was phrased over 40 years ago when the brake pedal was on the right and the clutch pedal was on the left and the acc pedal was in the middle and 6 inches lower. Then you had to use your heel and toe to blip the throttle. As I have explained with today’s pedal systems the heel and toe is not used, but the term still remains.

The pedal system in most road cars are not set up for heel and toe, so drivers are forced to go through some real contortions to be able to touch the brake and the throttle pedal at the same time. This is why I recommend you change the standard pedal set up to a race car pedal system if you are using the car for track racing, rally, drifting or track days it will make life a lot easier and improve your lap times.

I thought you may be interested in the Mazda RX8 fitting and installation pictures we have, the images are showing the test model that had no powder coat, when you order a unit it will have a professional Black powder coat finish as this picture.

Do Rally, Track, Drift and Race Cars Use Anti Lock Brake Systems (ABS)? – obp Tech Session

Hello Race Drivers all over the world.

Ok interesting situation has come up that I feel it is necessary to cover.

I have had an issue with a client that has a Drift car that is using a Hydraulic handbrake. The idea of the Hydraulic handbrake is so the driver can snap the back end and create a controllable drift.

He had a problem and could not lock the rear wheels. We asked him has he removed any valves or compensator systems that may be in the system? Has he looked at the brake schematics to make sure there were not systems preventing the cars wheels not to lock up? He told us he had removed all these systems and fitted new pipe work through out the car.

Ok at this point we were scratching our heads!! One of our technicians asked me has he removed the ABS, I could not remember asking a direct question on that, however we had discussed removing all systems that would prevent the wheels from locking.

So I asked him “Have you removed the ABS from the car”?

I am sure you can guess what he said “No he is still running the ABS”.

Ok now we have the solution to the problem.

The Antilock Brake System (ABS) is a fantastic development that was designed as most of the good safety systems in F1. However on Race Cars, Rally Cars, Drifting or Track Day Cars it is no good unless you have a very expensive system that has a very high pulse rate.

How can you disconnect the ABS?

Anti-lock brake systems save lives and should be maintained. However, Motorsport drivers often want to disable the system. For example, Rally competitions, Drifting events and sports driving are not suited to ABS controls. Skids and hard braking are overridden by ABS. This causes the brakes to pulse on and off and prevents the brakes from locking. Locking the brakes is the goal for most sports and competition driving events.

Here are three ways to disconnect the ABS:

  • Raise the bonnet of the car and open fuse box that contains the fuses and relays. Locate the ABS fuse and remove it. This will disable the anti-lock brakes without damaging any components. The brakes will function normally, but the anti-lock controls won’t.
  • Remove the main wiring connector that plugs into the anti-lock brake module. This module is located next to the brake master cylinder. Steel lines go from the master cylinder and are routed into the module. By disconnecting the wiring connector, you are disabling all the anti-lock brake functions.
  • Raise the car with a jack and place jack stands under the frame. Disconnect the anti-lock brake sensor on each wheel. This interrupts the sensor signal to the anti-lock brake system and effectively disables it.

This information is for race drivers and not to be used on the general high ways.

Please make sure that any modifications of this type are carried out by professional race preparation companies.
